Overview
Sarah Morningstar appears on the first page, sitting on the stoop of the trailer in South Dakota where she lived with her grandfather. She is a full blooded Lakota Sioux Native American and is dressed in a mix of Native and American clothes: headband, native tunic, jeans, and moccasins. During the early morning darkness, a tornado sweeps through the trailer park destroying everything in its path. Her home is gone, as is her grandfather, and she is left all alone in the world. In shock, she sits and stares at the horizon. She soon finds herself in a strange place and on a mission with three other comrades: to locate the Zah-re (Book of Truths). During their journey they will be tested individually and as a team, facing severe and dangerous circumstances, with no guarantee of ever getting home.
The three other comrades, also heroes in this series, disappear under strange circumstances, meeting up with Morningstar: Kai Li, an Asian boy working in a factory in Hong Kong, Liyah, a Palestinian girl living in the Gaza Strip, and Zack, an African American boy from a depressed neighborhood in Detroit. Kai Li leaves his mother and on his way to work disappears into the early morning light; Liyah, sent to the square to bring her young brother home to a family gathering runs into a chaotic clash of angry youths and police and vanishes into thin air; Zack, on his way home in an early evening storm, also disappears with the flash of the lightning.
The journey begins in a cabin in a faraway place, where they encounter the voice of their mystical host, Ooray. The four gather clues in the form of hand written letters, as they follow a map and make their way along the path they must remain on, if they are to make it home. Ooray eventually explains their new mission, and the powers of gifts he gives them are ultimately uncovered in dreams. Their real journey is then unveiled and sets the tone for the subsequent books in the series.

Epilogue
Liyah arrives at home from the square and joins the gathering. She walks into the living room and asks her father where her brother is. He replies that he never came home and that it was her responsibility to have brought him home; he wonders why she is asking this. Concerned that something has happened to her brother, Liyah talks with Khalib’s friends the next day who tell her they saw him leave the chaos in the square with some rough looking characters after the crowd disbursed.
After questioning others in the town she finds out that Khalib was likely taken somewhere where young boys are converted into terrorists. Unable to rescue him by herself and not trusting anyone, Liyah ponders signaling her new friends; Morningstar’s bracelet (one of the gifts from Ooray) then glows with a pulsating signal, summoning her and then the others, and paving the way for the next nail biting and enlightening adventure in the series.

"This book is beautifully written. Through the characters and their adventurs, a double message emerged. First, our differences enrich and empower us not divide us. Second, Working together we are stronger, smarter, and more powerful. It was a delightful read!"
